It is no secret that the global economy is in turmoil and there is a serious downturn in many European economies. However a recent article published on a leading Irish Technology website, Siliconrepublic shows that the old saying that gambling is recession proof is proving to be true.

According to the infographic compiled it shows that global online gamblingrevenues were estimated to be around $30 billion in 2011. What is more interesting is the rapid increase in online gambling in the past year. It was shown to overtake the increase of social media significantly. Online gambling has managed to outperform the growth of social media as was shown in the data. For the year 2010-2011 online gambling managed to attract more that 32% more users while social media only managed to show an increase of 4.5% for the same period.

In the UK lotteries still make up 40% of the market with sports betting a close second with 32%.Bingo came in third with 9% and the rest was made up by directories, games, poker and casinos.

In the U.S. things are different as online gambling is still largely restricted in most states. There the lottery makes up a massive 63% of the entire gambling market. Games made up 12% and sports betting came in third with 10%. The casinos made up 9% and online poker a 3% market share.
